For decades, Toyota has been the most studied manufacturing company in the world. Not because it is the largest, but because it consistently outperforms the competition in terms of quality, efficiency, reliability, and innovation all at once. How it manages to do this was a mystery for a long time.

The Toyota Way provides the answer. Not by describing what Toyota does, but by revealing why it works.

What do you learn in The Toyota Way?

Jeffrey Liker studied Toyota closely for twenty years and distilled from all that knowledge 14 management principles that together form the philosophy behind the Toyota Production System. In the book, these principles are grouped into four interrelated categories.

The first category revolves around long-term philosophy: making decisions based on a deep sense of purpose, even if that yields fewer immediate results. The second is about the right process: flow, pull, standard work, visual management, and stopping when problems arise—not as isolated tools, but as expressions of a single coherent logic. The third category focuses on developing people and partners: the idea that an organization can only improve sustainably if the people within it grow as problem solvers. The fourth category addresses continuous learning and problem-solving: the PDCA cycle, the 5 Whys, genchi genbutsu—go and see for yourself, understand the situation, and learn from what you see.

Liker illustrates each principle with numerous examples drawn from Toyota’s own practices—from the production line to top management—and shows how all these principles together form a system that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Why should I read *The Toyota Way*?

The Toyota Way is one of the most widely read and cited Lean books in the world, and for good reason. Many organizations that adopt Lean start with tools: Kanban boards, 5S, standard work. But without an understanding of the underlying philosophy, those tools remain isolated instruments that lose their luster over time.

This book explains that concept. It shows that Toyota’s success does not stem from clever techniques, but from a consistent and deeply ingrained system of thinking and acting that permeates every level of the organization. Those who understand this system can not only apply tools more effectively, but also better assess which tools are appropriate in which situations—and why.

The book has been published in Dutch, making it accessible to a wide audience. It serves as a logical starting point for anyone who wants to seriously apply Lean principles, and offers valuable insights for those who are already further along on that journey.

Who is The Toyota Way written for?

  • Anyone who wants to understand where Lean comes from and what the philosophy behind it is
  • Managers and leaders who want to bridge the gap between day-to-day improvement efforts and the bigger picture
  • Lean practitioners who are already familiar with their toolkit but want to gain a deeper understanding of the underlying logic
  • Students and professionals who are new to the Toyota Production System

What do fellow writers think of this book?

"Jeff Liker has achieved something that few others have: he has truly understood the Toyota Production System and conveyed that understanding in an accessible way to readers around the world." — Jim Womack, founder of the Lean Enterprise Institute

"The Toyota Way is the book I recommend to anyone who wants to understand why Lean works. Not the tools, but the philosophy. Liker explains it better than anyone else." — John Shook, former CEO of the Lean Enterprise Institute and co-author of Seeing Is Believing
