Concise, clear description of the elements of Lean in a logical order for both beginners and advanced users.
Co-author John Shook often says, 'it is easier to act your way into a new way of thinking, than it is to think your way into a new way of acting'. This goes against the natural tendency of many of us. We often want to understand something mentally before we act on it. With Lean, however, it works quite differently: you only start to understand it when you have done it a number of times. Kaizen Express is based on this way of 'learning by doing' at individual and team level. It's a book that you don't read from cover to cover, but that you have to experiment with in practice.
For people who are relatively new to Lean, it offers a good start with the Lean principles and implementation techniques. Because sometimes it is too easy to step over it, based on the misconception that 'we already know it', the authors do not describe this book as back to basics, but as forward to fundamentals - there is still a lot to learn and discover!
People who are already experienced with Lean, will be surprised that this book goes beyond explaining the techniques and principles. Especially in the Let's Talk sections, you are challenged to think more deeply about the real underlying goals, application possibilities and next steps of the different techniques.
Originally, Kaizen Express was developed as a tool for teaching the essential elements of TPS to employees working in Japanese factories worldwide. It is bilingual in format (English-Dutch) with many illustrations on practically every page reinforcing the key points. The book also includes a summary of TPS terms in Dutch and Japanese, and a collection of standard forms that you can use when applying Lean.
