Learning to See: Mastering Value Stream Mapping - Create Value and Eliminate Waste
Can't see where waste occurs in your processes?
Discover the true power of Value Stream Mapping with this practical workbook. It teaches you how to create value by fully mapping your value stream and effectively eliminating waste.
As the groundbreaking first workbook published by the Lean Global Network, "Learning to See" has helped countless organizations worldwide in their Lean transformation. It teaches you to:
❌Understanding your current problems in terms of crucial mismatches between material flow and information flow in a Current State Map, fundamentally different from process mapping
✅ "Discover in 2 hours where 30-50% of waste occurs in your processes"
✅ "Design improvements that reduce lead time by 40-80%"
✅ "Make it concrete with a step-by-step plan for implementation."
This is the first workbook in a series. The following workbooks will elaborate on the Future State improvements (i.e. flow, pull and leveling).
Learning to See deserves to be studied thoroughly. Waste arises from the aforementioned mismatch, so we must learn to see precisely that mismatch—hence the title. A common misunderstanding is that "systems thinking" means "considering the process from start to finish." As a result, many brown paper sessions are spent identifying individual instances of waste and bottlenecks, from which an action plan is then distilled.
True Value Stream Mapping is something completely different. It teaches you to recognize and address the underlying systemic causes (the mismatch).
It is no coincidence that this book is a standard part of our Lean Black Belt training!
