Art is the author of the LEI workbook Creating Level Pull: a lean production-system improvement guide for production control, operations, and engineering professionals, which was awarded a Shingo Research Award in 2005. In 2006, he was inducted into the Shingo Prize Academy. He is also the author of Four Types of Problems and Understanding A3 Thinking. Art was introduced to lean manufacturing during his 10-year stay in Japan, where he studied, lived and worked as one of the first non-Japanese employees at Toyota.

He devoted most of his career at Toyota to transferring production systems, engineering and management to plants worldwide. After Toyota, Art became director of lean manufacturing operations at Donnelly Corp. (now part of Magna Inc.), an automotive supplier with more than 15 facilities in North America and Europe.

He then joined McKinsey & Company as a leading expert in lean manufacturing. He currently helps companies execute lean transformations through his own company, Art of Lean.
