Lean transformations rarely fail due to a lack of knowledge about the tools. They fail because people don’t buy into them. Because managers know what just-in-time is, but not how to get a team moving. Because the theory is clear, but the practice is stubborn.
The Gold Mine tackles that problem at its root, not with a manual, but with a story.
What do you learn at De Goudmijn?
The Gold Mine is a management novel: a compelling story about Phil, a young manager tasked with saving a struggling factory. As you empathize with his struggles, his first visits to the gemba, his confrontations with his own team, and the slow but tangible breakthroughs he achieves, you’ll come to understand Lean in a way no textbook ever could.
All the core concepts of Lean are covered: just-in-time, kaizen, jidoka, andon, value stream mapping, problem-solving thinking, and Lean leadership. These concepts are always woven into the reality of a real-world transformation. You’ll see how resistance arises and how to deal with it. You’ll experience how small improvements build trust. And you’ll understand why Lean is fundamentally about developing people, not optimizing processes.
Spanning 398 pages and 21 chapters, this book bridges the gap between understanding Lean and being able to apply it.
Why should I read *The Gold Mine*?
Most Lean books explain what you need to do. *The Gold Mine* shows what it feels like to do it and why it’s so difficult. That’s what makes this book unique in the world of Lean literature.
Freddy and Michael Ballé deliberately chose the novel format because they knew that real change only takes hold when people can relate to it—not as an abstract methodology, but as something they have experienced themselves or could potentially experience. Readers often describe *De Goudmijn* as the book that finally made Lean click for them, after years of attending training sessions and plowing through workbooks.
The book is published by the Lean Management Institute and is considered one of the most accessible yet in-depth introductions to Lean leadership available in Dutch.

"The Gold Mine is the best book on Lean leadership I've read. It shows how a sensei guides people—not by providing answers, but by asking the right questions." — Jim Womack, founder of the Lean Enterprise Institute
"Freddy and Michael Ballé have achieved something few authors manage to do: they've brought complex Lean principles to life. You'll read this book in one sitting and keep thinking about it for weeks afterward." — Dan Jones, co-author of The Machine That Changed the World

About the authors
Freddy Ballé was one of the most experienced Lean practitioners in Europe. As a former director at Valeo and later as an independent consultant, he guided dozens of organizations through major Lean transformations. His decades of practical experience form the backbone of the story in The Gold Mine. Phil’s mentor in the book is largely based on him.
Michael Ballé is a researcher, author, and Lean coach, and one of the most influential voices in today’s Lean community. He is a co-founder of the Institut Lean France, writes regularly for Planet Lean, and, in addition to *The Gold Mine*, has several books to his name, including The Lean Manager and Respectful Leadership. Together with his father, he has created a genre that makes Lean thinking accessible to a much broader audience than traditional textbooks reach.
